Fulton Sheen Books
FULTON JOHN SHEEN (1895-1979) FIRST EDITION BOOK PUBLICATIONS
Bishop
Sheen published more than 90 books during his life. This list is composed of
what we believe is the most consistent set of first editions. Some additional
UK
firsts are not
listed.
Included
in this list are publications of his talks on the Catholic Hour radio show and his four
television shows. These talks were generally published by the National Council
of Catholic Men/Our Sunday Visitor in paperback form. A few were also published
simultaneously in hardback.
FIRST BOOK YEAR PUBLICATIONS
1. God and Intelligence (1925) -
Longmans, Green and Co.
God
and Intelligence in Modern Philosophy: A Critical Study
in the Light of the Philosophy of St. Thomas is
the published version of Sheen's dissertation for his "agrege en Philosophie" from the
University
of
Louvain
in
Belgium
. He was the first American to
achieve that degree.
LATER BOOKS
2. Religion Without God (1928) - Longmans, Green and Co.
Sheen's
previous work, God and Intelligence, examined God in relation to the anti-intellectual tendencies of the present day.
This volume is a continuation of that work and the two volumes together are a
complete philosophy of religion from both its formal and material
angles.
3. The Life of All Living (1929) - The
Century Co.
The
Philosophy of Life. Sheen's inspiration for this work is the ideas contained in the 11th chapter of
the fourth book of
Saint
Thomas
’ Contra Gentes.
This book provides an analogical description of Revealed Truths in terms of
biology. A Supernatural Biology or a Treatise on Divine
Life.
4. The Divine Romance (1930) - The
Century Co.
Seven
addresses from The Catholic Hour first printed as a pamphlet called "The Divine Romance" (1930) by the National
Council of Catholic Men (NCCM). The hardbound copy incorporates that information
along with some ideas from his previous book, The Life of All Living, and is
designated as a revised edition on the title page of the 1930’s first hardbound
edition published by The Century
Co.
Later
editions were published in 1935 by the Appleton-Century
Co.
5. Old Errors and New Labels (1931) -
The Century Co.
Uses
common sense with philosophical thought to examine contemporary ideas in the
field of morals, religion, science, evolution, sociology, psychology and
humanism. He shows that what was considered "modern" is only a new label for an old error.
He also shows that what was considered "behind the times" is really beyond time.
** Rare in Dust Jacket **
6. Moods and Truths (1932) - The
Century Co.
This
work is a continuation of the previous work, Old Errors and New Labels, but is
concerned principally with religious thought. The work compares "Moods" (i.e.
fads and fancies) which dominate modern thinking, and "Truths" (i.e. God-made)
which inspire ultra modern thinking.
7. The Seven Last Words (1933) - The
Century Co.
Palm
Sunday April 9, 1933 Catholic Hour Talk, published simultaneously in pamphlet form by the National Council of
Catholic Men (NCCM) and HB by The Century Co. The last words spoken by Christ as
he died on the cross along with an explanation of their
meaning.
8. The Way of the Cross (1933) -
Appleton-Century Co.
9. The Eternal Galilean (1934) -
Appleton-Century Co.
Dec.
24, 1933 to April 1, 1934 15 Catholic
Hour Talks, published simultaneously in pamphlet form by the National
Council of Catholic Men (NCCM) and HB by The Appleton-Century
Co.
10. The Philosophy of Science (1934) -
Bruce Publishing Co.
11. The Mystical Body of Christ (1935) - Sheed & Ward
This
book was based on a study of
St.
Thomas
’ treatise on the Mystical Body of Christ in which
he emphasizes the triple office of Christ as Teacher, King and Priest, which
offices are prolonged in the Church whose mission it is to teach, to govern, and
to sanctify. It explains how the Church is the Mystical Body of Christ and how
each part of the Church relates to the Mystical Body of
Christ.
12. The Moral Universe (1936) - Bruce
Publishing Co.
A
Preface to Christian Living
Jan.
1 to April 16 1933 Fifteen Catholic Hour Talks, first published in pamphlet form entitled "The Hymn of the Conquered"
by the National Council of Catholic Men. There is deep conviction in everyone of
these talks that the moral problem of our day is not just another problem, along
with the social, economic, and industrial questions. It is the problem. And its
solution is the key to the solution of all the others.
13.
Calvary
and the Mass (1936) - P. J. Kenedy & Sons
This
book explains the relationship of Christ's death "
Calvary
" to the mass. He said: "Do this for a
commemoration of me." And that action whereby we re-enact His Death on the Cross
is the Sacrifice of the Mass, in which we do as a memorial what he did at the
Last Supper as the prefiguration of his
Passion.
14. The Cross and the Beatitudes (1937)
- P. J. Kenedy & Sons
This
book is a correlation of the Seven Beatitudes and the Seven Last Words. The
eighth Beatitude in the language of St. Thomas Aquinas "Is a confirmation and a
declaration of all those that precede. Because from the
very fact that a man is confirmed in poverty of spirit, meekness and the rest,
it follows that no persecution will induce him to renounce them. Hence the
eighth beatitude corresponds in a way to all the preceding seven." There is no
strict correspondence between the Seven Beatitudes and the Seven Words, but this
work assumes that they are not unrelated, for one seems to be related to the
other as precept and deed. Both were delivered on a mountain; Our Lord began His
Public Life on the Mount of the Beatitudes and closed it on the Mount of
Calvary.
15. The Cross and the Crisis (1938) -
Bruce Publishing Co.
The
parable of the prodigal son forms the basis of the ten chapters. This series of
discussions deals with the problem of the salvation of civilization and
culture.
16.
Liberty
, Equality and Fraternity (1938) - The
Macmillan Co.
17. The Rainbow of Sorrow (1938) - P. J. Kenedy & Sons
Bishop
Sheen revisits Christ's last seven words from the Cross that he first wrote
about in The Seven Last Words and
uses them to speak on the questions of sorrow and suffering in the world. This
book was later reprinted by Garden City Books in 1953.
18. Victory over Vice (1939) - P. J. Kenedy & Sons
19. Freedom Under God (1940) - Bruce Publishing Co.
In
this book, Bishop Sheen discusses Religious Freedom vs. Communism. He answers
all claims, silences all arguments and presents the undeniable advantages of
Freedom Under God.
20. Whence Come Wars (1940) - Sheed & Ward
This
book is a development of a series of Monsignor Sheen's radio talks. Not specific
to any war, his concern is with the roots of the evils in ourselves that lead to war. We cannot examine the consciences
of nations but we can examine our own. Within that personal examination, he
comes to the question of why God allows war and his answer is at once convincing
and terrible.
21. The Seven Virtues (1940) - P. J. Kenedy & Sons
With
a similar writing style that he used in his thirteenth book The Cross and the Beatitudes, where he
compares Christ's seven last words on the Cross to the Beatitudes, Monsignor
Sheen compares those seven last words on the Cross to the seven virtues
(Fortitude, Hope, Prudence, Faith, Temperance, Justice and
Charity).
22. For God and Country (1941) - P. J. Kenedy & Sons
23. A Declaration of Dependence (1941) -
Bruce Publishing Co.
A
series of discussions in which Monsignor Sheen focuses attention on World War
II, its causes and effects. He places the blame on the abandonment of Divine Law
- on the apostasy of men and nations from God. Beginning with a study of the
spirit of revolution, he goes on to discuss War and the Shattering of Illusions;
Providence and War; Conditions of a just War; Militarism and Pacifism; What Are
We Fighting For?; War as a Judgment of God; Understanding of Judgment;
Universality of Judgment; A Declaration of Dependence and the Papacy and
International Order.
27. Philosophies at War (1943) - C.
Scribner's Sons
Monsignor
Sheen gives in this book his conception of the underlying causes of the War (WW
II), and of the ways by which the war may be most truly won. He explains that
the battles we are fighting are only the physical manifestations of the
revolution. In this revolution we must defeat the barbarism from without
(Fascism, Nazism) and we must defeat the passive barbarism from within. Each of
us must say: I must fight the enemy of man, and I must fight myself when I am my
own worst enemy.
28. Seven Words to the Cross (1944) - P.
J. Kenedy & Sons
29. Seven Pillars of Peace - 1944 -
Charles Scribners Sons
30. Love One Another (1944) - P. J. Kenedy & Sons
Reflections
on the Brotherhood of Man and how we can strive to achieve
it. Its pages present an array of truths, reflection on which should provide
devotional inspiration and a desire to seek, in underlying spiritual values, the
sure way to harmonious living with one another.
31. Seven Words of Jesus and Mary (1945)
- P. J. Kenedy & Sons
32. Preface to Religion (1946) - P. J. Kenedy & Sons
33. Characters of the Passion (1946) -
P. J. Kenedy & Sons
34. Jesus, Son of Mary (1947) - D. X.
McMullen Co.
One
of two books written by Monsignor Sheen designed for children. Jesus, Son of Mary describes the life of
Christ in simple terms from His Birth to His Resurrection. This book is an
excellent read for children or for parents to read to very young children in
order for them to begin to understand Jesus and the purpose for his life. The
illustrations added by Rafaello Busoni will entertain
and help children understand the book.
35. Communism and the Conscience of the
West (1948) - Bobbs-Merrill Co.
36. Philosophy of Religion (1948) -
Appleton-Century-Crofts
The
purpose of this book is to show the relationship between human reason and
religion. This involves four distinct problems: first, the history of the
abandonment of reason and the final descent into irrationalism; second, a recall
to the right use of reason in discovering the existence and nature of God;
third, a study of the impact of the physical and historical sciences on
religion; fourth, the value of the new approach to religion from man instead of
nature.
37. Peace of Soul (1949) - McGraw -
Hill
Monsignor
Sheen offers in this book a way for man to bring peace to his soul. He asks us
to stop blaming our subconscious for all our ills and to examine instead our
conscience; to turn away from psychoanalysis and turn to God. He defines
Freudianism as a revolution against the restraining influences of society. He
tears the masks from the false gods of rationalized self-indulgence and
misguided social reform, and explains spiritual discipline and Divine authority
as a means to greater freedom.
38. Lift Up Your Heart (1950) - McGraw -
Hill
Monsignor
Sheen discusses the inner life of modern man in terms of three levels and the
way to rise between them. Level One, the one most of us live in today is called
the superficial self, or what we think we are. Level Two, the real self or
personality, is the plane of natural goodness. It is on this level that you may
acquire the worldly virtues and develop peace of mind. Level
Three, the level that you may acquire the worldly virtues and develop peace of
mind. Level Three, the God-centered life of the spirit is the only place
that man can obtain complete fulfillment. It is at this height that self
interests are forgotten in joy and peace of soul.
39. Three to Get Married (1951) -
Appleton-Century-Crofts
Monsignor
Sheen offers penetrating answers to the questions: Why does it take three to get
married? Is there a difference between sex and love? How is the cult of the body
best served? What is the unbreakable bond in marriage? What is the true meaning
of "two in one flesh? Why does fidelity in marriage imply more than abstention
from adultery? This is an essential book for every married person or anyone
thinking of marriage.
40. The World’s First Love (1952) -
McGraw - Hill
Bishop
Sheen portrays woman, motherhood, virginity, love, marriage, sorrow, joy,
freedom, and suffering in his life of Mary, Mother of God.

Sheen with a specific purpose - to bring solace, healing and hope to hearts;
truth and enlightenment to minds; goodness, strength and resolution to wills.
There are three basic assumptions of this book: First: people are governed
rather than governing. Second: Society is made by man, so man in his turn is
made by his thoughts, his decisions and his choices. Third: Our happiness
consists in fulfilling the purpose of our being.

simple and practical advice he gives based on years of contemplative thought
about subjects such as Goodness, Happiness, Virtue, Learning, Wisdom and Faith
will inspire everyone.
46. God Love You (1955) - Maco Magazine

and exciting answers to the biggest questions of all: Why are we here? Where are
we going? What roadblocks will we meet? What superhuman aid can we expect along
the way? This book breathes new meaning into the old ideas of Heaven and Hell,
and new life into the concepts of faith, tolerance, love, prayer, suffering and
death. Keenly aware of evil in the myriad forms it takes in today's world
(pride, avarice, envy, lust, anger, gluttony and sloth), he links them with the corrosive forces that never cease in
their attacks on the Church, Christianity, and those who desire to be Christians
today.

Dell Pub.
62. The Choice: The Sacred or Profane
Life (1963) - Dell Publications
63. The Priest Is Not His Own (1963) -
McGraw Hill
The
Priest is Not His Own is far more than a book for priests, or for those considering the priesthood as
a vocation. Just as his earlier work, Life of Christ, was based on the thesis
that Christ offered no other sacrifice but Himself, so in this new book, Bishop
Sheen envisages the priest as a man sacrificing himself in prolongation of
Christ's Incarnation. Drawing on his profound knowledge of Scripture, he is able
to describe the exact and true significance of the individual priest, and in
vibrant detail, his constant unending sacrifice as victim.

Forest

In
this book, Bishop Sheen is able to convey often complex subject matter through
the use of analogy and metaphor. Ranging from the "God is dead" controversy to
modern man's loneliness, from how-to-get-out-of-the-rat-race to the lives of
modern saints, these sermons pose basic questions about the values and beliefs
of today's society, offering practical advice and sound
comments.
